The Trumbull Area Reading Council is a non-profit organization made up of teachers, librarians, principals and others dedicated to reading and literacy programs in all aspects of education. TARC is the local affiliate of the International Reading Association.
TARC members meet 4 times a year to hear various speakers, authors and illustrators who provide useful ideas and techniques advantageous to fostering literacy. TARC provides members with grants and scholarships while also participating in service projects locally and around the world.

“Inspiring Literacy in Our Community”

Our projects will include:

“Babes to Readers” will help develop a love of reading to our newborns. We will distribute book bags to ALL new moms at Trumbull Memorial Hospital instead of only to those who are disadvantaged. In order to fulfill this obligation, we need to make at least 60 bags per month. Please continue to donate new board books, rattles or other baby items.

“Community Readers” will instill the love of reading a step further to children of all ages in our community. We will be collecting new children’s books and with the help of our Girl Scouts, Alexandra and Adelaide, who will now be working on their Silver Project since they completed their Bronze Project with us last year, will be recording the books on CD’s in order for The Children’s Rehabilitation Center to use them as listening centers. They will also include activities and songs. They will be at our first meeting to tell us more about their project. Please remember us with your Scholastic Book order freebies or $1.00 books.

“Lifelong Readers” will keep the love of reading alive in the elderly. We will be collecting large print reading materials to be donated to Windsor House in Champion. You may purchase books, Bibles, crosswords and word searches. They can be obtained cheaply at the dollar stores.

“Magazines for Military” At each meeting we will be collecting magazines and loose change to send care packages to our troops who are away from home serving our country. Please limit the magazines to those from 2012 so we can keep them up to date current events. You may also purchase books, crosswords, etc. At our first meeting we will also be collecting personal care items, snacks, stationary or anything else soldiers would enjoy receiving to celebrate Veteran’s Day.

In order to fund these projects and continue author visits and TARC grants we are looking for sponsors from the community. If you would like to “Sign on to Literacy” please fill out the attached form to make your donation. Your name will be added to our list of sponsors. Please encourage other teachers/administrators in your building to do so as well. For every donated book or sponsorship collected, your name will be entered into a drawing. Our prize pack for our October meeting will be a Gift Basket from Elm Road Drive In. We will continue to reach out to businesses from our community who would like to support literacy by making a donation to fund our raffles. If you know of a business who would like to donate an item, please let us know!
